Welcome to Rainforest Class!

Your teacher is Miss Bass.

Our Teaching Assistant is Mrs Cordwell.

Our Spring Topic is…

English

We  are currently reading…

‘Mini Rabbit, Not Lost’ is a fantasticly fun book but it has few words. we will use the minimal text and amazing illustration to inspire our own stories using a range of grammar skills. We will use coordinating and subordinating conjunctions, prepositions, verbs and speech punctuation to demarcate our dialogue.

Later in the term, we will use our non-fiction skills to create newspaper reports about the eruption of Mt Vesuvius. We will learn how to report facts, use reported speech and use past, present and future tense.

Fluency: Fluency sessions will consolidate and ‘overlearn’ key skills from Key Stage 1 and previous Year 3 sessions so that they are kept fresh and used correctly throughout all work.

Handwriting: We will have daily handwriting sessions that will teach the children correct letter formation, joins and how to use a pen correctly.

Spelling and Phonics: We will begin Year 3 by consolidating our phonics knowledge using Monster phonics. We will address any gaps in learning and assess their understanding of High Frequency words too.

Maths

Number: We will continue to use a range of manipulatives and models to support the children with place value and their understanding of the number system.

We are spending time mastering column addition and subtraction this term and we are really enjoying it!

We will use different resources while we use column addition to regroup while adding 3 digit numbers.

Fluency: During fluency sessions, we will address any gaps in learning from last spring and summer and build on this knowledge to meet Year 3 expectations. These sessions will be quick games and lots of fun for everyone but are vital for the children during this unusual time.

Shape: Towards the end of this half term, we will explore angles, shape and measure.

Times tables:

The children will be encouraged to use TTRockstars to build their speed and fluency with their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We will begin to learn our 3 and 6 times tables in class and strengthen recall with TTRockstars and other games.

Each child is expected to read at home daily and will read throughout the week at school with an adult. As we move through the year, some children will begin to use ‘Accelerated Reader’ which is a program designed to accelerate children’s comprehension skills when reading independently.
