English

To start our final term, we will be doing some persuasion work. Our text will be Leon and the Place Between. This rich and engaging text will allow us to see both sides of an argument – step into the box or not – as well as giving us ideas for creating persuasive adverts.

Our second unit will be based around an amusing text called Dear Teacher. In this book, a boy corresponds with his teacher by letter. The main character writes a series of letters to his new teacher giving reasons for why he cannot return to school after the summer holiday. His reasons for not returning become more and more outlandish. We will write our own letters on a range of subjects including to our new year 5 teacher.

Maths

In Nile, we have been exploring formal methods of multiplication and division with a specific focus on 6, 7, 8, 9 times tables. This half term, we will be doing lots of work on fractions. We will be adding and subtracting fractions, finding fractions of quantities and finding fractions of measures.

Our topic

Our final topic is called The Great Food Journey.

This topic will be largely based around our science learning about the digestive system.

We will be exploring the digestive system and the journey that food takes through our bodies.

In Art, we will be exploring the work of Andy Warhol. His pop art, which includes some famous food work, will be our inspiration.

Our soup cans…

Our more modern takes on pop art…

In History, we will be learning about what life was like in Anglo-Saxon times. We will be exploring food, drink and entertainment.

Understanding Science and Technology

In Science, we will also be investigating teeth. We will look at the different types of teeth that humans and animals have. We will investigate the impact that a range of drinks have upon our teeth.

In DT, we will be making links to our previous science work by creating our own light boxes.

In Computing, we will be learning how to use the features of Google Slides to create a presentation.

Understanding the World

In RE, we will be discovering the key beliefs held by Muslims. We will look at the main features of a mosque and explore the main festivals.

In Spanish, we will be learning how to talk about the resources in our classroom.

Understanding our Health and Well-Being

In PE, we will be playing badminton this term, focusing on our awareness of position, control, timing and accuracy.

In PSHCE, we will be learning about ‘Relationships’ and what a positive relationship looks like.

Home learning

In line with the rest of the school, we encourage your child to spend time reading at home each evening. This can be recorded in their Reading Record by an adult or by the child.

As the Multiplication Test occurs at the end of Year 4, we encourage your child to spend 10 minutes each evening practising their skills by playing TTRockstars.

Each Friday, we set homework on Google Classroom. We post a selection of activities and ask that your child has a go at completing three different activities. They should spend no more than 20 minutes on each activity.

Water bottles

We ask that your child brings a named water bottle to school each day. These are kept by our sink so that your child has free access to them throughout the day. Your child can refill their bottle at one of the water fountains when they need to.

PE kits

We ask that your child has their PE kit in school each day of the week as our timetable is subject to change due to the weather and the availability of space. In line with our school uniform policy, they require a pair of plain blue jogging bottoms for the winter months as we may have our lesson outside.
